Build Change (www.buildchange.org) is an international non-profit social enterprise that designs earthquake-resistant houses in developing countries and trains builders, homeowners, engineers and government officials to build them. Build Change’s designs are affordable, culturally appropriate, and use materials and techniques that will continue to be used after our intervention is finished. Build Change has ongoing post-earthquake housing reconstruction programs in West Sumatra, Indonesia and Sichuan, China. So far, Build Change has improved the design and/or construction of over 20,000 houses worldwide.
Build Change has been operating since 2004 in Indonesia, where its team of Indonesian technical professionals has trained over 500 builders in safe construction techniques and contributed to the construction of more than 16,000 safer homes. Build Change has also partnered with the Indonesian government and the NGO community to develop earthquake-resistant design and construction guidelines and simple messages about safe construction. Build Change has also been working in Haiti since the 2010 earthquake, training our own technical staff and that of other organizations to improve damaged but salvageable buildings through seismic retrofit evaluation, design, and construction supervision and training builders to build them safely. Now, following the 15 October earthquake and the Typhoon Yolanda in the Central Visayas region of the Philippines, Build Change has been asked to provide technical consulting for the permanent reconstruction effort.
Build Change is a US-based 501(c)(3) non-profit in operation since 2004.
