Organization Description
 
Founded in 2004, Build Change is a non‐profit social enterprise whose mission is to save lives in earthquakes and hurricanes. Build Change designs safe buildings, trains homeowners, builders, engineers and government officials to build them, works with governments to develop and implement building standards, partners with the private sector to improve building materials quality and create jobs, and facilitates access to incentive-based capital for reconstruction and retrofitting by partnering with financing institutions and government subsidy programs. Build Change started its work in Aceh, Indonesia, after the 2004 earthquake and tsunami, and since has expanded to include programs in China, Haiti, Colombia and the Philippines. Build Change has trained more than 20,000 people on earthquake-resistant design and construction techniques, and has provided technical assistance for more than 40,000 safer homes, impacting an estimated 200,000 people.
 
Build Change and its Founder and CEO, Dr. Elizabeth Hausler Strand, have received numerous awards including most recently the 2013 Structural Engineer’s Association of California Award of Excellence in the Research/Guidelines category, 2011 Schwab Foundation US Social Entrepreneur of the Year, and 2011 Lemelson-MIT Award for Sustainability. Build Change has won grants from Echoing Green, Draper Richards Foundation, Mulago Foundation and Ashoka-Lemelson. and was named a 2008 Laureate in the Equality Category for Technology Benefiting Humanity by the San Jose Tech Museum of Innovation Tech Awards.  Build Change has been published or featured in numerous media outlets and journals including Rappler, The New York Times, Huffington Post, NPR, BBC, ABCNews, Fast Company and Innovations journal. Upon request from USAID, Build Change has written three primers, on post-disaster housing new construction, retrofitting and site hazard mitigation. 
 
 
POSITION DESCRIPTION:    Director of Impact Monitoring and Reporting
 
For the position of Director of Impact Monitoring and Reporting, Build Change is seeking an experienced, innovative, outgoing individual with a proven track record of creating and running systems for data collection, management, and reporting. This position reports to the Chief Operations Officer.
 
Responsibilities:
 
  • Mentor Build Change’s IMR staff to expand and improve impact monitoring systems for Build Change’s technical programs globally
  • Expand existing monitoring, evaluation and reporting strategy for country programs
  • Collect and compile baseline and impact data on Build Change’s builder training and homeowner technical assistance programs
  • Assess existing Build Change IMR tools and procedures (database and collection tools), research, suggest and implement improvements
  • Integrate field data collection tools and applications into IMR system
  • Develop a standardized metrics dashboard that can be applied organization-wide
  • Identify capacity needs and build capacity of Build Change’s program teams to execute strategy
  • Mentor program staff to interview builders and homeowners, take photographs and write stories for reports and Build Change’s website
  • Craft and execute a post-program impact evaluation strategy to assess long-term impacts of Build Change’s work
  • Quantify cost per impact and Social ROI
  • Work with COO and senior management team to put in writing Build Change’s existing approach to  indirect impact monitoring and reporting and to standardize and improve the reporting of indirect impacts
  • Document and tabulate Build Change’s indirect impacts from programs, including but not limited to reviewing project reports, performing field surveys, and interviewing partner agencies, engineers, builders and homeowners 
  • Establish requirements and procedures for indirect impact data collection and train program staff to collect and compile these data
  • Prepare written weekly, monthly, donor, and project completion reports
  • Work with COO and senior management team to improve and standardize quarterly and annual reporting of program teams of progress against goals
 
Qualifications:
 
  • Minimum 5 years professional experience in similar position with demonstrated IMR experience
  • Outstanding, outgoing interpersonal skills, high energy level, and ability to speak persuasively in front of large and small groups
  • Ability to work independently
  • Willingness to travel globally
  • International development experience preferred
  • Extensive experience with data management systems and platforms
  • Proficiency in MS Office, particularly Access, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Experience building applications for mobile devices
  • Fluent in English with excellent professional writing, presentation, and communication skills
  • French, Spanish, Haitian Créole, Bahasa Indonesia, and Tagalog all pluses
  • Knowledge of and passion for Build Change’s mission
  • No ego, drama, or pessimism; the successful candidate will be flexible, humble, patient, and have a good sense of humor
