YOUR NEW OPPORTUNITY
Build Change is in search of a Senior Human Resources Generalist to provide support to the daily Human Resources functions at Build Change. This position can be performed remotely from anywhere in the United States. 

As the Senior Human Resources Generalist, you will utilize your professional experience and excellent organizational skills to oversee Human Resources for US-based and country program employees, Expatriate employees, and contractors.  Under the supervision and guidance of the VP of Talent, he/she/they will be responsible for upholding the organization’s standards of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging when administering Human Resources functions in Build Change’s US and country programs, ensuring appropriate policies and procedures are equitable for staff. He/she/they will have the opportunity to recruit outstanding candidates for our US and international programs, identify and assist in the management of HR programs to meet staffing needs, plan and coordinate the performance review process, liaise with external vendors and maintain policies that reflect Build Change’s organizational culture.
In addition, the incumbent will be responsible for assisting in the formation and management of job descriptions for positions, onboarding and orientation of staff, and the maintenance of the Build Change employee handbook.  

This position reports to the VP of Talent HR, & DEI&B.
WHO WE ARE
Founded in 2004, Build Change is an innovative nonā€profit social enterprise whose mission is to greatly reduce deaths, injuries, and economic losses caused by housing and school collapses due to earthquakes, extreme weather, and fires. Our global experience shows that home improvement programs focused on improving existing housing can be carried out successfully across a range of countries and disaster contexts. To do this, we implement programs that are both economically and socially sustainable. Our approach looks beyond construction and engineering, to create an environment in which people want to improve the safety of their homes, and in which it is possible and affordable for them to do so. Build Change is currently active in South East Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, South America, and the United States.

Build Change is the recipient of multiple awards, including a 2017 Skoll Foundation Award for Social Entrepreneurship, and 2016 Open IDEO Urban Resilience Challenge Winner, and was a top three finalist in IBM’s inaugural Call for Code Developer Challenge in 2018.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under direct supervision of the VP of Talent, and in collaboration with Build Change staff, the Senior Human Resources Generalist will be responsible for delivering the following:
COMPLIANCE: Ensure that appropriate policies and procedures are in place that follows required US-Federal, State, and or country program employment laws and reflects Build Change’s organizational culture. 
  • Leverage and manage the relationship with Build Change’s legal representation (Employers Council) for HR and compliance matters.  Provide recommendations on organizational policies that comply with US-Federal, State, and country program laws.     
RECRUITMENT: Recruit for all positions with a lens toward DEI&B practices– Assist in the preparation of job descriptions, recommending salaries, posting to job sites, and interviewing candidates.  
  • Manage Build Change’s Applicant Tracking System (Applicant Stack).
  • Make weekly recommendations to hiring managers for review. Update posting trackers, administer recruiting assessments, and conduct reference checks. Make offers as needed. 
  • Work in collaboration with the Communications and Marketing Director to maintain job postings up to date on the website and on Applicant Stack. 
  • Update and maintain Build Change’s recruitment files on an ongoing basis. 
ONBOARDING/OFFBOARDING: Onboard and orient new staff – ensuring new staff have the information and tools needed for a successful employment experience.   
  • Facilitate the hiring and onboarding of new staff. Prepare offers, continuation letters, and consultant contracts as needed. Administer onboarding and offboarding paperwork, prepare trackers, and update hiring managers as staff enter/exit the organization.
  • Ensure that all onboarding procedures are completed in a timely manner such as I-9s, background checks, policies, and Construction Site Safety, and Harassment Preventions trainings.  
EMPLOYEE RELATIONS: Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy. Conducts investigations and provides support to staff. Engages legal council when necessary, following all US Federal, State, and country program laws.  Makes recommendations to senior leadership and the VP of Talent following investigations. Follows up with staff as necessary. 
BENEFITS: Assists the Controller and VP of Talent in managing the Build Change benefit program to meet the needs of
staff. 
  • Manages and approves paid time off requests for staff and updates files. Fields questions/requests about paid time off from staff. 
PERFORMANCE REVIEWS: In collaboration with the US, Country Program Admin staff and supervisors, the Senior HR Generalist will plan, coordinate, and administers the US and Country Program performance review process that engages and supports staff. 
  • Tracks and facilitates the annual (or six months) Senior Management Team (SMT) or non-SMT performance review process.
  • Administers constructive and timely performance evaluations.
  • Update trackers associated as needed.
DEI&B:  Assist the VP of Talent with Build Change’s Coffee Breaks program by scheduling meetings between staff, and fielding questions.
  • Research and provides recommendations for organizational-wide equitable practices with a lens toward employee equity, engagement, and compliance.  
EMPLOYEE HANDBOOK & FILES: Maintains and updates the Build Change employee handbook and employee files.
  • Ensures the Build Change website is current and provides the Communications and Marketing Director updates for the monthly internal newsletter. 
OTHER: Researches and provides updates and recommendations to the VP of Talent on HR topics/compliance and employee matters of importance.
  • Speaks and maintains relationships with vendors regarding services for Build Change (Employers Council, Criteria, Clear Law Institute). 
  • Ensures the oversight and daily workflow of the department.
Any other duties as assigned by the VP of Talent. 

GENERAL:
GLOBAL REMOTE ROLE: Work from home, while collaborating with colleagues around the world (Asia, Europe, North America, Latin America, and the Caribbean).
TRAVEL: Up to 10% of the time on average per year.
SUPERVISION: This role will not be in a supervisory capacity.

REQUIRED SKILLS:
  • A deep understanding of US - Federal, State labor laws, and regulations in the US. An understanding of global labor laws in any of our country programs is favorable but not required. 
  • Experience working with multi-state US employees, Expatriate staff, and employees in other countries.
  • Experience sourcing candidates and posting roles on different recruiting sites, including sites to attract employees in an international setting.
  • Familiarity with supporting and delivering human resources functions for an international non-profit organization.
  • Experience with Applicant Stack or similar Applicant Tracking systems with a non-profit organization. 
  • Outstanding organizational and customer service skills and the ability to manage competing deadlines and priorities.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify the missing pieces.
  • Exceptional communication skills with an understanding of and sensitivity to the target audience.
  • The ability to build professional and collegial relationships with people of various backgrounds, abilities, and cultures, both in person and remotely.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite Google workspace or related software.
  • The ability to change priorities on a daily basis.
 
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
  • BS/BA in human resources, international relations, Psychology, or another related field.
  • At least five years of human resource experience, preferably with an international non-profit organization.
  • Fluency in any other language spoken at any of our country programs
  • SHRM or HRCI Certification is preferred but not required. 
Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
