Founded in 2004, Build Change is an innovative international nonā€profit social enterprise whose mission is to save lives in earthquakes and hurricanes. We do that by designing disaster-resistant houses and schools; training homeowners, builders, engineers and government officials to build them; working with governments to develop and implement building standards; partnering with the private sector to improve building materials quality and create jobs; and facilitating access to incentive-based capital for reconstruction and retrofitting by partnering with financing institutions and government subsidy programs.

Build Change is the recipient of multiple awards, including a 2017 Skoll Foundation Award for Social Entrepreneurship, OpenIDEO Urban Resilience Challenge Winner, and was a top three finalist in IBM’s inaugural Call for Code Developer Challenge in 2018.

Construction supervision is a critical task for retrofitting, as it ensures that seismic resistant elements are being built properly. Considering the high volume of buildings that need an intervention and the cost of high skilled labor to perform supervision, Build Change has envisioned a digitized solution for automated quality assurance. ISAC (Intelligent Supervision Assistant for Construction) will be a mobile app functionality with backend tool that performs quality control on particular construction activities through photos taken on site. To classify construction activities as good or bad we are planning to generate a training set for a Machine Learning model made up of artificial images that resemble real life construction. For example, different types of wall or rebar configurations. As 3D Generalist, you will be responsible for defining and implementing the strategy to generate a robust training set of images.

  • Explore different software available to generate realistic 3D modeling of construction-like scenarios.
  • Work together with the engineering team to define the parameters that will be tweaked in the model in order to generate random iterations of “Go” and “No Go” images.
  • Write the scripts using a visual programming interface or code based to automate the generation, classification and storage corresponding to the status of the image (Go, No Go).
  • Explore different effects in terms of creating realistic images from models, to reduce the gap between computer-generated images and real life construction photographs.
  • Explore AR (Augmented Reality) / MR (Mixed Reality) rendering options for future functionality upgrades.

You have:

  • in-depth knowledge on topics like normal mapping, UV layout, lighting and shadowing techniques
  • a high degree of proficiency in rendering and retouching 3D renders to accentuate photorealism
  • a proficiency to work in multidisciplinary teams
  • expertise in high quality rendering and exporting in video formats

Your experience includes:

  • at least 3 years’ experience with advanced knowledge on 3D modeling software such as Maya, Blender, Adobe Substance, 3DS Max, ThreeJS, Houdini or similar
  • experience in computer science, programming or fluency in programming languages, which is desired
  • experience with VR/AR/MR software
  • architectural or construction experience, which is a major bonus point

You would describe yourself as:

  • drama-free, optimistic, flexible, humble, patient, and having a good sense of humor
  • fluent in English

And maybe you also:

  • have worked in the Caribbean, Latin America, Asia or emerging nations
  • speak Spanish, French or any of the languages spoken in our program countries
