YOUR NEW OPPORTUNITY
Build Change is currently recruiting for a structural engineering consultant to provide remote technical leadership and support to our programs in the Caribbean, Comoros and Maldives. This position will report to Build Change Caribbean Director and Engineering Program Manager and will also work closely with Build Change Project Managers and staff engineers.
Examples of possible work include:
- Haiti: Updates to an existing housing construction guide; development of training material on the updated National Building Code (CNBH) for builders, engineers, and homeowners.
- Comoros: Development of technical materials to support the assessment and retrofit of existing school buildings.
The position will be remote, with flexible working hours necessary to suit coordination with staff and partners based across the globe. It is anticipated that this will be a full time (40 hours per week) position, however part time options over 20 hours per week may be considered.
Depending on project needs, travel (up to two weeks at a time) may be required to the Caribbean, Comoros or Maldives. Where field travel is necessary, costs of travel, insurance, accommodation and food will be covered by Build Change.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of the structural engineering design resources developed by Build Change for confined masonry, timber, reinforced concrete, reinforced masonry and retrofitting solutions.
- Participate in the development of structural engineering technical resources, including structural and architectural design criteria, design calculations, building assessment procedures, plan and detail drawing sets, bills of quantity, construction quality checklists, and training materials for partners and clients.
- Provide engineering expertise, and be willing and confident to apply engineering judgment in the absence of code-based guidance.
- Ensure technologies and solutions are consistent with Build Change’s philosophy of disaster-resistance, sustainability, affordability, and cultural appropriateness.
- Develop and successfully execute technical work plans through ownership of project milestones and consistent communication with supervisors.
- As needed, represent Build Change in meetings and communications with project partners as coordinated with the supervisors.
- Support project and program managers as needed by contributing to project administration and internal and external project reporting.
OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE:
You have:
- Master's degree in Structural Engineering or equivalent.
- Professional licensure or chartership at a well recognised institution in your country of work, if applicable.
- 4 years or more of past work experience as a structural engineer.
- Excellent English language skills, advanced French would be a strong plus. Spanish or other languages spoken in Build Change program locations are also welcomed.
Your experience includes:
- Structural analysis and design for masonry, timber, and reinforced concrete buildings in regions exposed to earthquakes and strong wind storms, preferably following US codes (IBC, ASCE 7, ASCE 41, ACI 318, TMS, AWC) and/or Eurocodes. Experience with retrofitting solutions is a strong plus and familiarity with other international codes is also welcomed.
- Production of technical documents, such as calculation reports, drawings sets, bills of quantity, design guides, and training materials.
- Quality control of design and construction documents, both your own work and that of others.
- Construction supervision for quality control, health and safety, and compliance with design documentation.
- Communication and presentation of your work to a variety of audiences, including through clear and concise written reports and engaging presentations. The ability to communicate technical concepts in an accessible way.
- Independent ownership of deliverables and project milestones, including development and implementation of technical work plans, clear and consistent communication with supervisors and team members.

- Professional, organised, with excellent communications skills.
And maybe you also:
- Have worked in the Caribbean, Latin America, Asia or Sub Saharan Africa.
- Have additional experience with:
- Autodesk Revit
- Production of 3D construction details
