WHO WE ARE

Founded in 2004, Build Change is an innovative international nonā€profit social enterprise whose mission is to save lives in earthquakes and hurricanes. We do that by designing disaster-resistant houses and schools; training homeowners, builders, engineers and government officials to build them; working with governments to develop and implement building standards; partnering with the private sector to improve building materials quality and create jobs; and facilitating access to incentive-based capital for reconstruction and retrofitting by partnering with financing institutions and government subsidy programs.

Build Change is the recipient of multiple awards, including a 2017 Skoll Foundation Award for Social Entrepreneurship, OpenIDEO Urban Resilience Challenge Winner, and was a top three finalist in IBM’s inaugural Call for Code Developer Challenge in 2018.

YOUR NEW OPPORTUNITY

Build Change is growing the development and use of technology tools to expand the reach of our mission and is seeking an Experience Designer & Strategist to help lead this effort. Build Change works in a multi-faceted ecosystem of homeowners, contractors, government entities, NGOs, and partners, with a wide variety of skillsets, cultures, and knowledge. The tools we create need to be appropriate and usable for each member in that ecosystem, and we are looking for the right person to lead the definition and execution of the experiences across both our self-developed tool sets and our partner tool sets.

As an Experience Designer & Strategist, you will lead the improvement of Build Change application and tool user experience and design.

  • Develop personas and user experiences for applications and tools across the Build Change value chain
  • Develop the Build Change experience theory and model
  • Integrate a mix of Build Change developed and partner tools
  • Work on both high-level design strategy and execution specifics
  • Work with a broad mix of partners, including leadership, partners, clients, and software developers
  • Actively participate in planning and execution of technical tools and products to ensure they meet experience and usability goals and requirements

You will also have the opportunity to:

  • Influence Build Change information technology strategy and process
  • Drive a user-centric design and prioritization process

You are prepared to:

  • Work with a diverse, distributed team across multiple time zones
  • Travel (at times international) as necessary for user and team interviews, testing, and collaboration

OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE:

  • 5 years of experience in web and mobile user experience interface design
  • The ability to lead user experience strategy development efforts, including person and customer journey development
  • Qualitative research skills

Your experience includes:

  • User needs analysis
  • Experience strategy and approach
  • Quantitative analytics tools such as Google Analytics
  • Agile planning and development processes

You are able to:

  • Develop and execute holistic user experience strategy
  • Work remotely with high productivity
  • Conduct in-person and remote usability testing
  • Influence teams to practice user-centered design practices
  • Understand impact vs. effort of approaches to achieve practical and efficient results
  • Supervise employees and contractors performing detailed design work

You would describe yourself as:

  • Empathetic, optimistic, flexible, humble, patient, and having a good sense of humor
  • Adaptable, multi-faceted
  • Fluent in English

And maybe you also:

  • Have worked in the Caribbean, Latin America, Asia or emerging nations
  • Speak Spanish or any of the languages spoken in our program countries
  • Have an advanced degree in experience design, service design or graphic design
