ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION

Founded in 2004, Build Change is an innovative nonprofit social enterprise whose mission is to greatly reduce deaths, injuries, and economic losses caused by housing and school collapses due to earthquakes, extreme weather and fires. Our global experience shows that home improvement programs focused on improving existing housing can be carried out successfully across a range of countries and disaster contexts. To do this, we implement programs that are both economically and socially sustainable. Our approach looks beyond construction and engineering, to creating an environment in which people want to improve the safety of their homes, and in which it is possible and affordable for them to do so. Build Change is currently active in South East Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, South America and the United States.

Build Change is the recipient of multiple awards, including a 2017 Skoll Foundation Award for Social Entrepreneurship, 2016 OpenIDEO Urban Resilience Challenge Winner, and was a top three finalist in IBM’s inaugural Call for Code Developer Challenge in 2018.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

For the position of Accountant, he/she/they will be performing a wide variety of reporting and analyses using Excel. The successful candidate should be a detailed-oriented individual who has experience with Quick Books and can deliver accurate financial reports on a timely basis. He/she/they will have advanced Excel skills that can be used to generate reports, budgets and forecasts to enable management and the country program directors to effectively manage their programs and the organization as a whole. He/she/they will also have experience in developing proposal budgets for the US government (state and federal), foundations and other institutions (world bank, UN, NGOs, corporations, etc.). Aside from accounting functions and supporting the Controller, producing budgets for proposals is a key function of this position.
 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Accountant reports to and supports the Controller on all finance, budgeting and accounting-related matters for the organization. The position is part accountant and part pricer.

Accounting Responsibilities (estimate 50% of time):

  • Help maintain all of the organization’s accounting entries and records using Quickbooks, prepare journal entries, upload and review entries from country programs
  • Prepare monthly financial reports for management in Quickbooks and Excel
  • Oversee accounting staff at each country program and ensure that all accounting and procurement activities and policies are consistent, understood and followed
  • Help improve accounting and procurement policies across the organization
  • Process US and expatriate payroll and allowances and review payrolls of country programs
  • Process US payments to vendors and employees
  • Process US expense reimbursements
  • Process country program transfer requests
  • Prepare invoices as needed
  • Reconcile bank statements for HQ and country programs as needed
  • Maintain concise records of all contributions received and reconcile that with the information maintained by the Development team
  • Help maintain details of all general ledger accounts including security deposits, prepaid expenses, fixed assets and depreciation, and accrual accounts as needed
  • Assist the Controller in working with auditors on the annual audit and addressing specific accounting issues as they may arise
  • Prepare federal, state and local financial and tax filings

Finance & Pricing Responsibilities (estimate 50% of the time):

  • Develop budgets for the Build Change team in consultation with the Controller
  • Prepare Market analysis and cost estimation for projects in the US and in the field
  • Support development efforts in regards to costing and pricing proposals and providing additional financial information as required
  • Ensuring Build Change’s budgets are compliant across a range of donors, meet requirements and regulations, and are priced cost-effectively for Build Change
  • Ensure no proposals are rejected for cost reasons
  • Distribute monthly financial reports to HQ and country program directors and review the current status of each project
  • With the assistance of the country program directors, update budgets for each project and program as necessary
  • Assist in preparing annual budgets
  • Manage financial reporting requirements for all projects and funders and prepare financial reports as required on either a monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, or annual basis
 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • In the process of becoming a Certified Public Accountant, CPA preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
  • Minimum 3 years' professional experience with accounting, pricing, and financial analysis
  • High level of proficiency with Quickbooks and Excel
  • Experience with an international NGO or non-profit social enterprise preferred (not essential)
  • Experience preparing budgets and financial reports for entities such as USAID, UNOPS, the American Red Cross, NGOs, corporations, foundations, and other stakeholders and partners
  • Experience managing cash flows, budgets, and reporting for multiple projects simultaneously
  • Management and task execution skill set that includes ownership over milestones, work plans, and reporting
  • Proficiency with other tools such as MS Word and PowerPoint
  • Exceptional attention to detail and quality
  • Ability to work independently and willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends to meet deadlines and overcome time differences with associates based in project countries
  • Knowledge of and passion for Build Change’s mission
  • The successful candidate will be flexible, humble, patient, and have a good sense of humor
